CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
JANE SPENCE
As the CEO of Galileo MAT, Jane works closely with headteachers and other senior leaders to provide strategic direction and leadership through shared vision and values. Accountable to the Trust Board for all aspects of school performance, as well as financial and operational measures, the key driver for all, is ensuring every Galileo child develops a love for learning, has high ambitions and achieves their goals – whatever they may be.
Jane has worked in education her whole career in a wide range of roles. Starting out as a teacher in FE colleges, she quickly became aware of the inequalities and lack of opportunity faced by the students in her care. It was apparent to her then as a young teacher, that education was the only thing that could really change the course of lives and has been committed to this ever since.
Her diverse experience includes: college leadership, national qualification development, learning and skills policy delivery, education funding allocation management, she worked for the DfE as ‘head of academies’ with the Regional Schools commissioner and as CEO of an academy trust serving areas of significant and complex challenge in Newcastle and Sunderland.
Jane’s leadership is outward facing and collaborative, working closely with partners to ensure Galileo pupils have the best experience possible and to support the development of colleagues within the Trust and beyond.
In her spare time, Jane enjoys spending time cycling, walking, going to the theatre, time with family and friends and cheering her two sons from the side of the rugby pitch.
