Pork, Bacon and Maple Syrup Creation Proves Top of the Chops

Pupils at St Peter’s CE Primary School in Brotton have crowned their sausage-making champion after weeks of sizzling excitement and creative cookery.

Following a whole-school taste test, seven-year-old Luna-Rae emerged victorious in the competition to design a new sausage flavour, claiming 60 per cent of the vote with her inventive American Breakfast Sausage, a blend of pork, bacon and maple syrup that captured the imagination of pupils and judges alike.

The contest was held to celebrate British Sausage Week and invited children across the school to dream up their own flavour combinations. More than 150 entries were submitted, featuring imaginative ideas such as Starfruit Surprise, Pork and Blueberry, and Turkey, Stuffing and Cranberry.

Two finalists were chosen: Luna-Rae and Imogen, aged 10, whose Extra Tasty Sausage combined apple, ginger and chilli pepper. Both designs were brought to life by Goodswen Butchers of Redcar, a family business with a proud 241-year history.

Shop owner John Gibbon made both finalists’ sausages and supplied them to the school for the tasting event, which saw every pupil take part before casting their vote for the overall winner.

“It has been a pleasure to be involved with the school,” said Mr Gibbon. “I really enjoyed showing the finalists around the shop and explaining the sausage-making process. They are a credit to the school. I have had customers coming into the shop asking me when the new sausage will be on sale.”

Luna-Rae said she was delighted by the result. “It was great to see all of the children in my class choosing my sausage flavour when we voted,” she said.

Even fellow finalist Imogen showed great sportsmanship, casting her own vote for Luna-Rae’s creation, which she admitted was “actually the best.”

Associate Headteacher Steve Woodhouse praised the pupils for their creativity and enthusiasm. “The whole competition has been a huge success,” he said. “It’s taught the children about food, local business and creativity in such a fun and memorable way. We’re so proud of Luna-Rae and of everyone who took part. We look forward to celebrating British Pie Week in March with some more exciting designs.”

Luna-Rae’s winning American Breakfast Sausage will go on sale at Goodswen Butchers in Redcar from Saturday 8th November, giving the wider community a chance to sample the flavour that proved such a hit at St Peter’s.

With more than 150 entries, two outstanding finalists and one well-deserved winner, the competition has proved a sizzling success and a true celebration of local talent, teamwork and Yorkshire spirit.
